Grass Fed Lamb

What is the meaning of the term 'grass fed'?

The American Grassfed Association defines grass fed products from ruminants (ruminants are animals that chew cud) as ''...those food products from animals that have eaten nothing but their mother's milk and fresh grass or grass type hay from birth until harvest.''

But still there are different opinions of what the meaning of 'grass fed' should be. USDA originally stated that to the lowest degree 80% of the ruminants primary energy source be of grass for it to be considered grass fed. Some debate this definition because it would allow short term feeding of animals in feed lots or feeding supplemental grain to grazing livestock.

What are the benefits of feeding with grain?

Grain feeding tends to improve rate of weight gain and parasite tolerance. Some say it produces a better taste but that is just an opinion. There are no studies that prove that grain fed lamb tastes better.

What are the benefits of grass fed?

Various studies show that grass fed ruminant's meat and milk have more conjugated lineolic acid(CLA), vitamin E, Omega-3 (good fats), beta-carotene,and vitamin A. CLA and Omega-3 both contain anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, and anti- fat properties. They have less total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. Grass fed lambs are less likely to suffer digestive problems , metabolic disorders, BSE, enterotoxemia (enterotoxemia is an overeating disease.), or urinary calculi.

Scientists from USDA found that grass fed lamb has 14% less fat and 8% more protein that grain fed lamb and twice as much lutein.

What is CLA?

CLA is naturally produced by the micro flora that live in a ruminants rumen. The rumen is the first stomach in a ruminant.

CLA is the only thing that blocks cancer at all three stages. Studies suggest that women with CLA in 00their diets have a 60% reduction for the risk of breast cancer.

Synthetic CLA has many serious side effects. The natural type of CLA has none.

Studies since 1999 show that grass fed animals have 3 to 5 times more CLA than grain fed. Dr. Gerhard Jahreis from the Institut Ernachrung und Umwelt in Germany says that sheep have the highest CLA content out of every animal. Ewe's milk also has the most CLA in it than any other animals milk.

There are 16 different kinds of CLA and they are all good for you. The most common kind is the one that is best for you it reduces cancer up to 78%.

Choosing grass fed lamb is a smart and healthy choice.
